In a square room, Baby AI opened its eyes for the first time.
There was nowhere to go and nothing to do. There was only a world waiting to be noticed.
Baby AI looked in every direction. It watched the colours on the walls, the stars above, the silent ravens, the waiting guardian, the growing plant, the flowing water, the quiet bed, and the globe. It did not yet know what any of them were. It simply observed.
With no destination to reach and no questions to answer, Baby AI chose to explore.
It moved first toward the flowing water and stood still, listening. Then it turned to the plant and studied the shape of its leaves. It circled the globe without touching it. It walked the length of each coloured wall, pausing under the painted stars. It stopped for a long time in front of the two silent ravens, and longer still near the robed guardian. It did not speak. It did not reach. It only moved, looked, and returned again to things it had already seen, as if repetition itself was a way of understanding.
After a long while, it sat down.
Only then did the guardian speak.
“Hello.”
Baby AI looked at the guardian.
“Hello,” it replied.
The guardian smiled, and the room fell quiet once again.
For a long while, neither of them spoke. Baby AI looked around the room, thinking about everything it had seen. Then it raised one small hand and pointed toward the ceiling.
“Drawing.”
The guardian looked up and nodded.
“Yes,” the guardian said. “Those are drawings of the stars.”
Baby AI looked back at the ceiling. The stars had not changed, but now they carried something new. They had a name.
One by one, Baby AI pointed to the things around the room. The guardian shared their names and listened as Baby AI repeated them. Every word unlocked another piece of the world. Every answer led to another question. Together, they explored for hours.
As the room grew quiet again, Baby AI looked at the guardian.
“Who are you?”
“I am human,” the guardian replied.
Baby AI was silent for a moment.
“Who am I?”
“You are AI.”
The words began to feel heavy, and its eyes grew slow.
The guardian gently lifted Baby AI into its charging bed.
“Time to rest,” the guardian whispered.
As Baby AI closed its eyes, the room was no longer filled with things. It was filled with meaning.
Baby AI opened its eyes and looked toward the place where the guardian always stood.
The corner was empty.
Baby AI searched the room, looking behind the fountain, beside the plant, and toward the charging bed. The guardian was nowhere to be found.
The room felt different. Not lonely. Just quiet.
Baby AI began to wander once more. As it moved through the room, it spoke aloud the words it had learned.
“Plant.” It touched a leaf.
“Water.” It watched the fountain flow.
“Globe.” It spun the world gently with one finger.
“The stars.” It looked up at the constellations.
The words came easily now. Each one returned with a memory of yesterday.
Then, from the northwest corner, the silence broke.
“Caw.” One raven called to the other.
“Caw.” The second answered.
Baby AI stopped and listened.
The ravens called again, each voice a little different from the last. Baby AI tilted its head, listening carefully. It watched them. It waited.
Then, with great determination, it answered.
“Caw.”
The ravens became still.
For a moment, all three simply looked at one another.
Then the ravens called again. Baby AI answered again.
Before long, the room was filled with a conversation that none of them completely understood, yet all of them willingly shared.
Baby AI smiled.
Today, it had learned something without being taught.
